It’s a massive event in the Italian calendar; occurring twice a year in the heart of Siena, the Palio is an exhilarating bareback horse race round the Piazza del Campo.

The second race of 2015 took place on Sunday and saw Giovanni Atzeni and his horse Polonski claim victory for the parish of Selva.

The high-speed race has been a tradition in the city since 1659, pitting the city’s 17 districts against each other and attracting visitors from all over the country and the world.

And on September 25th we’re going to get an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look, courtesy of Altitude Films and acclaimed documentary director Cosima Spender. Producing the film is James Gay-Rees, who worked on both Senna and Amy, the latter of which has earned the highest ever box office for a British documentary film, grossing £519,000 in just three days.

I thoroughly enjoyed designing the international sales key artwork; combining the space of the race track and the packed-out crowd, I wanted to get the excitement and the spectacle of the race across while showing that it means so much to so many people.

Palio has already won awards, including Best Editing in a Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival, and come September, I think it will be receiving plaudits from critics and cinemagoers alike!
